July 2008:

Klamath Watershed Arts and Music Festival:

Rita Riewerts, founder of Sun Catchers Project (SCP), attended the Klamath Watershed Arts and Music Festival held in Happy Camp, CA on July 19th, 2008. Here she presented a variety of solar oven designs to people in the community. The festival’s main sponsor, Mid-Klamath Watershed Council (MKWC), donated a booth space to SCP as well as chili to cook in the various solar ovens. Everyone was excited to see the differences in parabolic designs versus box cooker designs and to observe the effectiveness of both designs in cooking food quickly and effectively. SCP also hosted a presentation for children with instructions on how to make pizza and shoe box solar ovens.

October 2008:

Kayak “Source” Premiere/Subliminal Sabotage Concert:

Sun Catchers Project hosted a kayaking video premier of “Source” by Young Gun Productions followed by a hip-hop concert performed by Subliminal Sabotage on October 9, 2008 at Humbrews in Arcata, CA. The event drew in a great crowd with a lot of enthusiasm for the project. The audience was also privileged to witness a trailer for “Africa Revolutions Tour”, the latest kayaking adventure documentary, which highlights the Sun Catchers Project in action. The film will debut in January of 2009.

Burnt Ranch Race:
On October 10th, 2008

Sun Catchers Project hosted a big wave surf kayak competition at Moonstone Beach, North of Arcata, CA. This was the 4th Annual Burnt Ranch Event. It is one of the most extreme races for kayaking which gives athletes the chance to challenge themselves to the fullest while also incorporating play boating in the ocean. The competition was followed by a downriver kayak race in the Burnt Ranch Gorge on the 11th – 12th.

Harvest Bazaar: Harvest Bazaar in Forks of Salmon, CA on October 13th, 2008 :

This event has been taking place for more than 30 years giving gardeners, crafts people, musicians, poets, bakers, and artists the chance to play music, trade, sell or just display their unique gifts an abilities. Awards are given for superior quality produce, flower arrangements, great tastes, items of beauty and more. SCP added to this year’s bazaar by demonstrating the solar oven capabilities through baking bread and lentils. Funds were raised from the sale of the bread, lentils, and SCP merchandise with newly added bracelets and necklaces. The SCP booth won an award at the Harvest Bazaar for “Outstanding Energy”.

Humboldt State University on Jan 29th, 2009 :

Sun Catchers Project performed solar oven demonstrations in the quad at HSU on January 29th. Students and professors were very supportive, offering help with future events and asking questions about the project. We acquired emails and are developing a weekly volunteer booth at HSU to continue interaction with the community, enabling us to spread word about the project as much as possible. We are thinking solar and we are acting now!

University of Oregon Presentations on Nov 17th, 2008 :

Sun Catchers Project was invited to speak to the Entrepreneur Club as well as the Chi Omega Chapter at the University of Oregon on November 17th and 18th. Both presentations went very well. Students were extremely excited about the project with hopes to help with future events. Sun Catchers Project recruited students as volunteers to help with marketing strategies as well as grant research and fundraising opportunities. We plan on speaking with many more universities in the future.
